THOMASVILLE – Brookwood continued their dominance on Monday night, this time with a win over cross-town rival Thomasville. Matchups between the Warriors and the Bulldogs have historically been close with two of the last three games being decided by a point. However, this game was not as close. Brookwood maintained control from start to finish with excellent defense that saw Thomasville score their third-lowest point total of the season.

“We just got a lot of stops to where we were able to actually get into transition, get an early lead, and hang on to that throughout the game,” said Brookwood head coach Nate VanDuyne. “We take a ton of pride in single-digit quarters and we got one legit single-digit quarter. When you’re in the 40’s your average is very close to ten. To do that in high school basketball you give yourself a chance in every single game.”

Thomasville’s 46 points was their third-lowest point total of the season and that is something Brookwood has been looking for. VanDuyne has continually leaned on the defense and rebounding, stating how important that aspect of the game is, especially when you’re struggling to score.

The Warriors shot very poorly on Monday night, but, to their coach’s delight, their defense won the night.

“To win, not just excel offensively, but yet to really be in the driver’s seat the whole time, I mean it just speaks to the growth that we’ve made defensively and then also rebounding to finish possessions,” said VanDuyne.

With this win, the Warriors move to 21-1. Thier last three games will be region contests, though Brookwood has a commanding lead in the region. Only Deerfield-Windsor has a chance to take the number one spot away from them. The Warriors are currently ranked the top team in class 3A by the GIAA.

Thomasville will attempt to recover from the loss headed into their final stretch of region games. The Bulldogs are 2-4 in their last six games, though they have had stiff competition. At time of writing, the Bulldogs have seven games left and sit first in the region with a 4-1 record.
