THOMASVILLE- South Georgia Ballet was honored during Monday night’s City Council meeting with a proclamation, after being awarded the 13th Annual Governor’s Award of Arts and Humanities.
Councilman Scott Chastain presented the proclamation, sharing that he has had the privilege of working with SGB in its recent production of The Nutcracker, alongside his daughter.
“They do a lot of wonderful work,” Chastain said. “The confidence and grace they teach young girls in this community means a lot to a lot of people.”
According to the proclamation, Gov. Brian Kemp and First Lady Marty Kemp announced the recipients of the 13th annual Governor’s Award of Arts and Humanities on December 5, 2024. SGB was among one of 10 organizations to receive the prestigious award.
Established in 1998, SGB is known for its outstanding ballet training, three top-tier annual productions, and accessible arts education in Southwest Georgia.
“South Georgia Ballet was honored with the Governor’s Award for their significant contributions to arts and humanities in Georgia,” the proclamation read. “Gov. Brian Kemp thanks the organizations in the arts and humanities for their dedicated work that has made long-lasting impacts on Georgia’s cultural fabric.”
In order to receive the award, organizations underwent a rigorous nomination process, selecting only 10 members across the state for the 2024 year.
Upon receiving the award, SGB received a handmade sculpture from artist Charles Pinckney of Athens, Ga.
Chastain thanked SBG Executive Director Rachel Arnold, Officer Manager Morgan Rhoden, and Creative Director Melissa June for their contributions in the arts and humanities to not only South Georgia but to the people of Thomasville.
