CAIRO – The Cairo Syrupmakers continue to wrack up the athletic accolades. This time it is with athletic director Sam Holland. He was recently named the Region 1-3A Athletic Director (AD) of the Year.
The humble Holland praised his individual coaches for the recognition he received.
“It’s an unbelievable coaching staff that we have here,” Holland said. “Every coach is easy to work with, great to work with. What I love probably more than anything is they all want the very best. When you get around a group of people that want to find a way to be great instead of complain about what they don’t have, it inspires me to know the coaches that I’m working with, they’re going to try to find a way to make the very best of what they’ve got.”
Cairo is well-equipped to compete in any sport because of its facilities and financial backing from the administration and the Cairo community. West Thomas Stadium just underwent renovations in 2021, which included new AstroTurf installed. Holland said a new baseball, softball, and track complex is also in the works.
“The support across the board from our administration is incredible,” Holland said. “There’s no doubt that this community, this county loves this school and school system. It takes great pride in the work that’s being done. I’m just tugging on Superman’s coattails, that’s all.”
Cairo is in the same region as Dougherty, Westover, Monroe, Peach County and Bainbridge.
