Former Cairo coach hired at Veterans

THOMASVILLE – A former Cairo football coach is back coaching in Georgia and will once again match wits with one of Cairo’s fiercest rivals – Thomas County Central.

Steve DeVoursney, who retired from the Syrupmakers in 2022 after seven seasons, was recently named the new head coach at Veterans (Warner Robins). 

Central and Veterans are in Region 2-5A and the two teams will square off at Veterans next season.

Cairo hired DeVoursney in 2015. He won 53 games with the Syrupmakers and led Cairo to region championships in 2016 and 2018. Cairo won 11 games and advanced to the quarterfinal round of the state playoffs in 2016 and won 10 games in 2018, advancing to the quarterfinal round of the playoffs.

DeVoursney has success coaching against the Yellow Jackets, tallying a 4-1 record during his tenure with the Syrupmakers. 

DeVoursney won a state title with Griffin in 2013.
