- Judge Catherine Smith took the Oath of Office on Wednesday afternoon, before joining her fellow Judges on the bench.
THOMASVILLE- It was a historic Wednesday afternoon at the Thomas County Courthouse, as Judge Catherine Mims Smith was sworn in as the first female Superior Court Judge in the Circuit.
The swearing in ceremony began with Rev. Bruce Francis providing the Invocation, before Judge Jim Prine shared a few words.
“It’s an honor for me to be here today to introduce our next Superior Court Judge, Judge Catherine Smith,” Prine said.
Judge Smith is a lifelong resident of Thomas County and attended Wesleyan before receiving her law degree from University of Georgia. She then returned to Thomas County to serve her community.
“She served her community as an attorney in the private sector, in the Public Defender’s office and then came to work for the District Attorney’s office, where Catherine and I have spent many years working together,” Prine said. “Catherine has always put 110% effort into everything she’s done.”
Prine went on to say that Smith most often prosecuted crimes against children and was essential in the success and flourishment of the Treehouse Children’s Advocacy Center.
“She served our community well and we look forward to having her serve on the bench with us,” Prine finished.
Smith was then sworn in, while a huge crowd celebrated her accomplishment in the courtroom.
Following her swearing in, Smith addressed all the individuals who helped vote her in as the newest Superior Court judge.
“I’m absolutely amazed at all those who came out to support me as I take this gigantic step and start my next role in the Judicial system,” she said. “I’m absolutely humbled you took the time out of your day.”
Smith started off thanking those who helped her form new relationships during the campaign, through knocking on doors and making phone calls, along with the people who contributed financially to make the campaign a success.
“I owe you all a tremendous thank you,” she said. “What a team we make.”
She then thanked her friends who encouraged her during the process and picked her up when she was feeling down, along with the people she worked with and appeared before, as they pushed her in a new direction and gave her new opportunities.
She concluded by thanking her family for hanging in there.
“It’s been the most difficult 12 months, but I promise things are going to get better,” she smiled. “I couldn’t have done this without you by my side and supporting me.”
Smith concluded her speech by promising the crowd to remain faithful and loyal, while working hard to uphold the oath she took.
