The fire took a total of 6 hours to put out, with the final flames being extinguished around 8:30- 9 a.m. Despite a hard-fought battle, Jones said the home was a total loss, but the couple was uninjured.

At this time, the fire is still under investigation with both the State Fire Marshal and the County Fire Marshal working in conjunction to uncover the source of the flames. However, foul play is not suspected at this time.

While the investigation is ongoing, Jones reiterated the importance of smoke detectors.

Jones said he is unsure if the Pavo couple had smoke detectors, but said they save lives everyday.

“We provide smoke detectors free of charge and install them,” he said. “Everyone needs a smoke detector; you never know what might happen.”

The couple was offered the help of Red Cross. Luckily, they had insurance and hope to be able to get back on their feet soon. In the meantime, they are staying with family members.
