THOMASVILLE — The Thomasville Bulldogs boys basketball team will have a new coach when it begins next season.

Ben Tillman, who was the head coach for 15 years and led Thomasville to the 2018 state championship, confirmed he has accepted a new position with the Board of Education office.

Tillman, who was also an assistant coach with the program before accepting the head coaching position, notched his 300th career win during last season. He helped establish the Bulldogs as a basketball power in Class AA. But the time was right for him to step away.

“I think I’ve done a lot of good things for Thomasville City Schools and the basketball program,” Tillman said. “I think it’s just the right time to step aside and pass the baton on to someone else.”

Thomasville finished last year 23-5 en route to winning the Region 1-AA championship and advancing to the second round of the state tournament. Tillman discussed the emotions of stepping aside at this point in his career.

“It will be different not having to plan and all of that stuff. The season hasn’t started yet and we really haven’t gotten into summer basketball, so I don’t know what I’m going to feel like,” Tillman said. “I am excited about my new opportunity.”

The Bulldogs will join Region 1-AAA next season.
