Central girls track and field send nine to state

THOMASVILLE — Thomas County Central’s girls track and field team had a strong showing at the Class AAAA sectionals in Carrolton on Saturday. It advanced nine individuals, including two relay teams to the state track and field championships, scheduled for May 12-14 in Albany.

Anna Spencer tied the school record with a long jump of 18-01. She also advanced in the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash. She was also part of the 4×100-meter relay team that advanced, joining Shameria Wright, Sania Virgil and Marranda Coleman.

Virgil also advanced in the 300-meter hurdles. Cadence Curnalia advanced in the 3,200 meters, and she was also part of the 4×800-meter relay team, joining Dayana Clark, Gracie Adams, I’Keyera Hill.

Wright also advanced in the high jump. Trinity Guion advanced in the 100-meter hurdles.

“The girls competed extremely hard this weekend. The weather was cool and very windy, but our mindset and mission stayed the same,” Central coach Chad Ward said. “Our goal was to advance and move on to the state championship finals. I remind them from time to time that people will forget an excuse, but they will always remember execution. They just have to work hard and execute the plan that was set at the beginning of the season.”
