CAIRO — It did not take long for the Cairo Syrupmakers to find their next head football coach. All they had to do was look within the program itself.

Cairo announced that David Coleman would be the team’s next head coach, ahead of summer workouts that will begin Tuesday, June 7.

“We are excited about David Coleman being our head football coach. He is high character, hard working and loves Cairo High School,” Cairo athletic director Chad Parkerson said. “He is fired up about getting started.”

Coleman, a graduate of Cairo High School in 2006, has coached 10 years with the Syrupmakers; the first three as an offensive assistant and the last seven with the defense. He served as the strength and conditioning coordinator the last four years and as defensive coordinator the past two.

Coleman is the team’s third head coach since 2003, succeeding Steven Devoursney who served as head coach since 2017. Devoursney officially retired on Friday ahead of a move to relocate to Alabama.

Cairo finished 7-4 last season. Region 1-AAAA will consist of Cairo, Westover, Bainbridge, Hardaway and Shaw next year.
