THOMASVILLE — Thomas County Central’s boys and girls soccer teams can clinch Region 1-AAAA championships on Thursday. It would come at the expense of region rival Cairo.

The Lady Yellow Jackets are tied at 7-1 with Bainbridge atop the region standings. The teams split during the regular season with Central winning 6-0 last Thursday.

Central’s boys are undefeated in region play with an 8-0 mark following last Thursday’s 2-1 nailbiting win over the Bearcats. A win over the Syrupmakers this week would cap an undefeated regular season and region title for the Yellow Jackets. The Yellow Jackets won 2-1 in the teams’ earlier match this year.

“It’s been an interesting season with both teams. The girls had a couple of really quality wins early in the season. In the last two weeks, I think there’s a little bit of fatigue going on. The long haul of the season has brought us some struggles,” Central boys and girls coach Tony Voyles said. “But most of this team was involved in the region championship last year. We really took care of business (last Thursday). We really worked on some things tactically to try to have success against Bainbridge. The girls did everything that was asked of them to a ‘T’. They really showed their quality against Bainbridge. We’ve really put ourselves in the driver’s seat now. Now we just have to finish it off on Thursday against Cairo.

“The boys, at least in the region, have had a strong season. They went unbeaten in the region, beat Cairo at home 2-1. We’ve just got to finish it off with one more win on Thursday to finalize it. Both teams will be two-time region champions.”

Central’s boys are 10-4-1 and have won eight of its last nine matches.
