THOMASVILLE — In preparation for their spring football game against Dooly, Thomasville High School hosted their annual red and gold game. The team split into two as they battled it out on the grid iron, giving fans a small taste of what they will see in the fall.

The gold team dominated the game with big plays and solid defense as they pushed on to a 35-10 win.

Quarterback Cam Hill put on a show with his arm and his legs. Hill threw several touchdowns, including one that saw him scramble and fire a perfect pass on the run. He also rushed for a touchdown.

The Bulldogs’ run game had a strong showing as well. It was big play after big play as the number one offense piled on the points.

The spring game is difficult to assess. Many players are getting back into the rhythm of the game and for some, it’s their first chance to get on the turf in a Thomasville uniform. The red and gold game can also give fans and coaches mixed feelings, especially Bulldogs Head Coach Jonathan DeLay. On one hand, his offense scored 35 points. On the other hand, his defense allowed 35 points. But, when his number one offense went into half time down 10-7, DeLay let them have it.

“I really ripped into the number one offense that we’re letting them dictate to us the game,” DeLay said. “I challenged the offensive line especially. ‘In this second half, I’m going to put this on you. I want to see what you’re going to do. We are going to come behind you.’ and they stepped up to the challenge.”They absolutely did. They protected Hill, giving him time to make accurate throws and opened holes for the gold team’s running backs to break out into the open field.

Despite giving up 35 points, Thomasville’s number one defense, clad in their red jerseys, played extremely well in the first half of the game. They only allowed seven points and were able to cause trouble in the back field for the gold team.

“I was pleased to see the way we played in the first half. Our number one defense played outstanding,” said DeLay. “I told them down there at halftime, I really praised the number one defense, man. We were getting off the ball, we were getting stops, sacking the quarterback and lots of things.

An underrated part of football is the kicking game. It’s an overlooked position that holds the highest of expectations from fans. The Bulldogs’ kickers performed very well in the game. They made solid and deep punts and kickoffs and, though they didn’t face any opposition, the kicking team made 100% of their field goals.

DeLay is looking forward to Thomasville’s spring game against Dooly and helping this group of Bulldogs improve their game.

“The good news is this isn’t the end of spring,” DeLay said. “We’ve got another game next Friday night and we’ll see how much improvement we can make from this week to next week, because that’s what it’s all about. The biggest amount of improvement is game one to game two.”
