THOMASVILLE- Miss Kitty’s Feline Sanctuary & Adoption Center will host a Volunteer Kick-Off & Appreciation Event on Saturday, June 3, 2023, from 10 a.m. to noon. All past, present, and future volunteers are invited to attend.
“Miss Kitty started as an all-volunteer organization, and volunteers are still invaluable members of our team,” said Executive Director Carol Jones. “When someone gives of their time and talents, they are saving us money that we can direct toward saving more cats. And there’s no substitute for the nurturing they offer the cats and kittens in our care.”
A variety of volunteer opportunities are available. Foster homes help alleviate crowding at the sanctuary and socialize cats, making them more adoptable. All expenses for food, vet care, and litter are provided. The foster program has benefitted almost 500 cats and kittens over the past two years.
Other volunteer needs include photography, transport drivers, computer help, building and grounds maintenance, kitten cuddling, event planning, and help at adoption events. Volunteers are also needed at Miss Kitty’s Fabulous Finds, a thrift store located at 212 Smith Avenue that generates funds for the organization.
Miss Kitty Feline Sanctuary and Adoption Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 2010. In 2014, the organization launched the South Georgia Low Cost Spay & Neuter Clinic to help solve the problem of pet overpopulation. Since its inception, the clinic has provided spay and neuter services for more than 50,000 cats and dogs. The facility is on track to provide more than 8,000 surgeries this year.
“We have a multi-pronged approach to the problem of pet overpopulation in our area,” Jones explained. “When cats are relinquished to us, we provide housing, care, and advocate for their adoption. We also work to reduce feral cat populations through our Trap, Neuter, and Release program, known as TNR, in the community. And thanks to generous donors and grants, we are able to provide spay and neuter services at a discounted cost for both cats and dogs, which reduces the number of homeless kittens and puppies in our area.”
The volunteer event will be held at the Sanctuary and Adoption Center located at 425 Covington Avenue, across from the Thomasville Rose Garden. Hamburgers and hotdogs will be served for lunch, and staff will offer tours of the facility.
“We’re really looking forward to this event,” said Gail West, Volunteer Coordinator. “We want to show our current volunteers how much they’re appreciated, and it’s a great way for prospective volunteers to get to know us.”
An optional Crazy Cat Lady costume contest will take place at 11:30 a.m., with awards given for the top contenders. “I challenge anyone to top my costume,” West said.
