CAIRO- A Cairo man has been arrested on drug charges after a routine traffic stop.
Saturday evening, Cairo Police Department officer Austin Asbell pulled the driver of a Black Mercedes sedan over after noticing he wasn’t wearing his seatbelt. After stopping the driver on 10th Street SW, he noticed a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle.
After asking the driver, identified as 31 year-old Daimeian Cason, when he had smoked marijuana in his car last, Cason told him an hour before.
This led Asbell to conduct a probable search on Cason, in which he found $2,589 and a bag containing 79 baggies of MDMA in his pants. In the car, Asbell also found 11 grams of crack cocaine.
Cason was compliant at the scene and received four different drug charges, including trafficking, manufacturing, distribution and more. He is currently detained at the Grady County Detention Facility.
He also received a federal charge of distribution near a school, as well as a government housing facility, under 21 U.S. Code 860. He was within 1,000 feet of a middle school and a public housing project at the time of his arrest .
According to Cairo PD officer Brandon Griffin, there had been complaints about Cason prior to his arrest. He noted that Cairo is currently a hot spot of illegal drug activity, with cocaine, marijuana, MDMA and other drugs being distributed in their community.
There have been similar drug busts just weeks prior. Griffin said the Cairo Police Department will continue to target these drug dealers.
