PREPPING FOR THE DAY: Members of the Thomasville Amateur Radio Club setting up for the 2023 Summer Field Day.

THOMASVILLE- Last weekend, the Thomasville Amateur Radio Club held their annual Summer Field Day at the Shriners Club Ground, making contacts throughout North America over ham radio.

Larry Ochalek, club treasurer, said that they made over 100 contacts from when the event began on Saturday at 2 p.m. to when the event ended on Sunday at 2 p.m.

“We did 157 contacts over Saturday and Sunday with the radio club,” he said.

He said that the weekend had gone very well and that the whole of the club had a great time getting to make connections across the United States and Canada.

“We were on the air and everybody had a good time,” Ochalek said.

Ochalek added that some of the longest contacts made during the Summer Field Day were in Canada and California.

“Canada, I believe, was the longest one away,” he said.

An event with participation across North America, from other amateur radio clubs to individual hobbyists, Ochalek said that it was an exciting weekend and that he encouraged others in the local area to get involved.

“It’s always a good time to get out a radio,” he said. “It’s just like being at home when you’re behind a microphone.”

For those interested, Ochalek invited locals to their monthly meetings, where there would be plenty of friendly faces willing to help them get started.

“If anybody’s interested in the club, they can visit us,” he said. “We meet once a month on the second Thursday of the month, at 6:30 p.m. at the emergency operation center, that’s the fire station on Remington Ave.”
