Six Syrupmakers track athletes make Georgia top 20

CAIRO- Cairo’s track and field program will be getting a boost this season as six of their athletes have been named to the Georgia top 20 returning 4A track and field athletes list.
On the girls side, Zykierra Hightower, who runs the 400 meter, was ranked number twelve and D’Laesha Spencer, who runs the 100 meter, was ranked fourteenth.
For the boys Shot put competitor Dmauri Wooden and discuss thrower Melik Williams tied for twentieth while 100 meter runner Corey Baker took the thirteenth spot. The Syrupmaker that finished the highest is long jumper Octavian Teal, who tied for eleventh.
This group is no stranger to accolades on the field and in the classroom. Both boys and girls teams finished will excellent combined GPAs. The boys finished the school year with a 3.3 and the girls finished with a 3.5 GPA. Number twelve ranked Zykierra Hightower was also awarded the Envision Credit Union Ira L. Flowers Athletic and Academic Award, along with three other Syrupmakers, for achieving a 4.0 GPA.
Cairo had an excellent season in the track and field circuit this year. They had several athletes compete at the state meet and the girls finished the year ranked number 20 in GHSA 4A.
