God is sovereign

God is the sovereign king of His universe. I believe all thinkers can agree with that. In other words, God is the Boss. What He wants goes. No one can successfully oppose God. Everything that happens must be in His will. This means of course that He allows things that we cannot understand. He did not intend for us to understand everything. God owes no one any explanations. Our place is to simply trust Him and not ourselves. Psalm 3:5 says it best, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.”

I have heard people say, “A good God would not send people to hell.” The truth is that God is just. People send themselves to hell by rejecting His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, Who is the absolute only way to Heaven. Some people question why God would let a child die. I know of one mother who, after losing her son in an automobile accident, blamed God and would never set foot in any church again. How sadly confused she was!

It is very tragic to blame God for anything. He has His reasons for doing things or allowing things that we cannot understand. Again, it is our place to trust Him and realize we are not intelligent enough to comprehend a great deal of what happens in life. We should react as old Job did when he said, “The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord” (Job 1:21).

The Bible makes it clear that God elects some people to be saved, although He still gives everyone the free will to choose either to reject or receive Christ. How both of these can be true is a great mystery to man. It is what we call a paradox, and no one alive will ever understand a paradox. God did not give man sufficient intellect to understand a lot of His doings. For this reason, Paul advised against arguing and contending. He said, “O Timothy! Guard what was committed to your trust, avoiding the profane and idle babblings and contradictions of what is falsely called knowledge” (1 Timothy 6:20).

Some people have used election as an excuse not to witness for Christ and His Gospel. What these people fail to understand is that our witnessing is God’s preordained plan and actually a part of the process of God’s saving someone by electing him. In other words, God planned from the start that we would play a part in one’s becoming saved.

In fact, everything we do and everything that happens are all part of the way God gets things done by His will. God even uses evil people sometimes to do things that end up good. A good example of this is the evil that Joseph’s brothers committed against him. Joseph, a faithful and Godly young man, rose to power in Egypt and managed to save his people, the Hebrews, from starvation by having them come to Egypt where he had wisely stored away grain.

The point to all this is simply that God is indeed sovereign and everything that ever happens, good and bad, is part of His will and plan, though man cannot understand a great deal of it.
