CAIRO – Cairo’s wrestling team is off to a strong start on the mats; from the heavyweight division down to the lower weight classes.

The Syrupmakers have already competed in two tournaments and one match, heading into Saturday’s Tift Duals in Tifton, Georgia.

“It’s going good. We’ve had some success so far,” Cairo wrestling coach Scott Marshall said. “We’ve got a heavyweight this year that’s pretty good. Our lighterweights are looking pretty good. We’ve had a good season so far.”

Junior Cedric Smith is a leader in the team’s heavyweight division. He was a state qualifier last year. He’s posted a 9-3 record so far with all three losses occurring at an Atlanta tournament featuring 28 schools. He should contend for a Region 1-4A championship this year.

“He’ll win region, hopefully,” Marshall said. “We’re looking for him to place this year at state.”

Smith went undefeated in Cairo’s most recent meet at Bainbridge this week.

Junior Ralph Conyers is one of the team’s top lighterweights, competing in the 126-pound division. He’s recently returned to the meets following the cross country season.

“He’s won two of his matches since he’s been back, but it’s only been a week,” Marshall said. “Wrestling, you have to use your full body, and all your muscles are working the whole time. In cross country, it’s just your legs and lungs. First week was rough to get in shape.

“He’s looking pretty good.”

Jakin Ross, a freshman competing in the 175-pound division, finished 4-1 in Cairo’s most recent tournament.
