Syrupmakers honored with all-region selections

CAIRO – The Cairo Syrupmakers’ second-place finish in Region 1-4A netted the team a strong presence on this year’s all-region team.

Senior linebacker Jeremiah Williams was named the region’s defensive player of the year after recording a team-leading 81 tackles.

Cairo’s first-team offensive selections included senior quarterback Juderek Gee Simmons, senior lineman Cade Puckett, sophomore lineman Darrius Simmons, senior wide receiver Amari Powell and senior wide receiver Corey Baker.

The Syrupmakers’ first-team defensive selections included Darrius Simmons and Puckett on the defensive line, senior linebacker Melik Williams, senior linebacker Kylon Brown, senior defensive back OJ Teal and senior defensive back Keshen Spence. Cairo senior punter Drew Owen was a first-team selection as well.

Honorable mention selections included junior offensive lineman Jace Jones, junior defensive lineman Dmauri Wooden, senior defensive lineman Daylin Hines, junior defensive back Zorian Harvey-Sloan and senior defensive back Jveon Jones.

Spence was an all-purpose selection, while Bryian Duncan was named to the Fantastic Freshman Team.

“It’s a credit to their hard work and their effort this past year. We’re excited for them. It was a credit to the work they put in for so long,” Cairo coach David Coleman said. “I think it’s good for the team, the program, the players to see a little more reward for the work that they put in.”

Cairo finished the season 8-3 and 3-1 in region play. Cairo played Bainbridge for the region championship in the regular season finale.
