THOMASVILLE — There are 400 high schools across Georgia and every week throughout the fall season these 400 high schools engage in a battle on the gridiron. When the Friday night lights go out and results and performances go into the history books, the folks at Georgia High School Football Daily sit down and pour over every game to find the program whose victory was the most impressive and had the most impact. This week GHSFD traveled down to Thomasville to award Thomas County Central the team of the week award after their 31-24 defeat of Lee County.
The 9-0 Yellow Jackets have been on a tear this year and are showing no signs of slowing down. Their win over Lee County solidified them as one of the best teams in the state and made Central back-to-back region champions.
In terms of rankings, it would appear that the rest of the state is taking notice of Thomas County Central. Georgia High School Football Daily have the Yellow Jackets ranked second in Georgia 6A, right behind 9-0 Gainesville, and their composite rankings have Central at number one in 6A. Sports Illustrated has ranked the Yellow Jackets number ten in the state and Maxpreps has named them the number two team in Georgia behind Mill Creek and number 73 in the country.
This Friday night, the Yellow Jackets have a chance to make history. They will welcome in 4-5 Northside for the last regular season game of the year. With a win, Central will finish the season 10-0 for the second straight season, making it the first time in program history that the Yellow Jackets have gone undefeated in consecutive seasons. This would make not only the Yellow Jackets 20-0 in the regular season over the last two years, but head coach Justin Rogers will have won every regular season game as Central’s head coach.
To put that in perspective, Thomas County central won just five games in 2021. Between 2018 and 2021, the Jackets won just 19 games against 4A competition. Rogers and this Central squad have accomplished that in just two seasons where they also faced the challenge of playing much larger schools in 6A.
It’s safe to say that this Yellow Jackets team is special and they have a chance, once again, to etch their names in the history books on Friday night.
