CAIRO — It’s always nice for a football team when one phase has a great performance. When the defense dominates, or the offense can’t be stopped or special teams has a great day, it’s not very hard to win. What’s even better is when every part of your team puts points on the board, and that is exactly what the Syrupmakers did on Friday night.

Cairo put up points with every facet of their team. Offense, defense, special teams, everyone was having a good night on the Cairo sideline.

It was freshman defensive back Bryian Duncan who put the Syrupmakers on the board first with a pick-six that he returned 50 yards for the score to tie the game at seven. Pelham led 14-7 at the end of the first quarter, but then Cairo’s offense decided to get involved. Quarterback Juderek Gee-Simmons connected with Chris Stewart for a 23-yard touchdown, but Cairo wasn’t done yet. Running back KJ Spence punched it in from ten yards out for a Cairo rushing touchdown to make it 21-14 at the half.

Though the defense recorded a safety, it was all about the Syrupmakers special teams unit in the third quarter. Just a few minutes into the half, Cairo blocked a punt, which Spence scooped up and returned 18 yards for the touchdown. Later in the quarter, after Pelham cut the lead to seven on a rushing touchdown, Cairo’s special teams went to work and returned the kickoff for the score.

Gee-Simmons would strike again in the fourth, this time hitting Cam Brown for the 16-yard score. Pelham would score one more time in the game, but fell to Cairo 43-27.

Now, on a four-game win streak, the Syrupmakers will look to continue their winning ways as they will play host to Salem for the last non-region contest of the season.
