BOSTON- The Boston Carnegie Library had four special, furry guests this week. The library opened their doors to Fun Size Farms and their four bunnies on Wednesday, after children were read “Bunny and Me” by Adele Aron Greenspan and Joanie Schwarz.
Owned by Nancy Parkman, Fun Size Farms was invited to the library by Library Manager Suzanne Moore.

However, it didn’t take much encouragement for Parkman to be on board with bringing her furry friends.
“We like to do things with the community,” she said. “I had talked to Suzanne about maybe bringing some animals out that are associated with books they have in hopes it would encourage children to read and learn about some animals.”
The children who participated in the reading of “Bunny and Me” were then allowed to meet Parkman’s pet bunnies and ask questions related to the animals.
Parkman introduced the children at the library to four 8-week old bunnies named Harley, Thumper, Clover and Aspen, who are all siblings.
The children in attendance had several questions for Parkman, asking if all the bunnies were born at the same time and if they had a birthday.
Parkman explained that much like dogs and cats, bunnies are born in litters of 4-6 at a time, and that they did have a birthday.

Kids also questioned about the bunny’s mom and where she was on Wednesday. Parkman shared with the group that when bunnies start drinking water, they are typically separated from their mother, as she can become aggressive. This usually occurs around 8 weeks old, and had just taken place for Harley, Thumper, Clover and Aspen.
Kids were then allowed to take the bunnies from their cage and hold them, while Parkman shared her future plans to bring other “fun-size” animals to the library, once additional animal books were acquired.
“We just had baby goats on June 22, so we are hoping in a few months they’ll be ready to start socializing,” Parkman said.
Although Fun Size Farms is based in Boston, Parkman shared that after this initial experience at Boston Carnegie Library, she would be open to bringing her farm to any of the Thomas County Public Library branches.
Parkman said if invited to the other libraries, she has no expectations.
“It can be one child attending, or 10 and I’m happy,” she said. “I get to see the smiles on their faces and they learn about the animal, so it’s always fun.”
For those who would like to visit Parkman and her farm in Boston before she returns to the library, she offers private farm tours, where guests can see her Kunekune pigs, 28 chickens, Nigerian dwarf goats, pony, turkey and baby calf.
