Thomasville High senior Witt Wetherington puts his name on the line to play for Troy University.

THOMASVILLE — For Witt Wetherington, Wednesday afternoon signified a dream come true.

The Thomasville High School senior signed a letter of intent with Troy University on the first day of the signing period, surrounded by family, friends, teammates and many of the coaches along his way.

“I’m at a loss for words right now,” he said. “All the hours and the hard work that went into it … all the blood, sweat and tears that goes not it, it’s ridiculous.”

Wetherington was a first-team all-Region 1-AA selection at catcher and has been a linchpin in the Bulldogs’ success.

“We’re terribly excited for him, and we’re excited to see him in the next phase of life,” Bulldogs coach Erik McDougald said.

McDougald also was effusive in his praise of his star catcher, both between the lines, in the dugout and away from the field.

“Witt’s a young man who checks all the boxes,” he said. “It’s not just his baseball talent that has gotten him to this point. He’s getting to see the next step of his dream come true.”

Wetherington felt at home with Troy, which plays in the Sun Belt Conference.

“I liked how it wasn’t as big as a SEC or ACC school,” he said. “I love the coaching staff. Not only are they great guys to be around, but they know a lot about baseball. I know they’re going to make a good person. It’s just a great place.”

Wetherington said he wants to work on being more consistent in what he does before he officially becomes a Troy Trojan.

Meanwhile, he and his teammates believe there is some unfinished business ahead of them. Even his dad threw down the gauntlet — a state championship.

“We.ve got to focus on that first,” the younger Wetherington said. “We still got almost all of our guys. We’re ready to go make a run. We’re ready to get a ring. This is it. We’ve got one goal. That’s all that on our minds right now.

“Nothing is going to stop us.”
