Lady Jackets using ‘one day at a time’ mindset

THOMASVILLE — The script the Thomas County Central Lady Yellow Jackets used to start the season will be the one they use to end the regular season this week — one game at a time.
Even with the Lady Yellow Jackets on the verge of capturing the Region 1-AAAA championship this week, head coach Robyn Trammell and her ladies are not wavering from that approach.
“I’m very proud of them. They do a great job. We’re just taking one game at a time,” she said. “It says a lot about them and the way they work together as a team. We’re just trying to keep a level head, stay focused and, again, just take it one game at a time.”
That mindset is what has Central 23-3, in first place in the region standings and a subsequent No. 1 seed in the upcoming state playoffs. Central can officially claim the region crown with a win against Cairo in one of their three games this week. The two teams tangle on Tuesday at Central.
The Lady Jackets have won five straight, which followed a nine-game winning streak earlier this season. The secret to their success is that the focus has not wavered; even against opponents that were overmatched.
“It’s just getting them to play the better competition when we can and getting them together as much as we can to play so they can work well together and know how to play with one another,” Trammell said. “It’s just the consistency of that which we try to maintain every year.
“The biggest thing for me is as long as the girls continue to grow each game and work as a team and be more about each other and playing as a team, I feel like that’s a win. I feel like if that’s what our focus is then we’ll continue to be successful and not get ahead of ourselves.”
The first round of the GHSA state tournament will be on Oct. 12.
