THOMASVILLE — COVID-19 continues to impact the community, including the future of the Senior Center that closed earlier this year when Southwest Georgia Council on Aging funding was cut.

Coupled with a decrease in funding and the prevalence of the novel virus, the Senior Center remains closed.

Meals previously served at the Senior Center are being prepared at several Thomasville restaurants and picked up by seniors or their family members, said Andre’ Marria, vice chairman of an advisory committee assigned to coordinate efforts to reopen the Stevens Street facility.

The Senior Center is “on hold,” Marria said, and the resurgence of the virus is further hindering reopening the center.

A survey of Senior Center patrons showed they want services to continue. 

“They told us what they want,” Marria said.

Favorite activities mentioned are singing, musical programs, arts and crafts and special events, such as the center’s annual Valentine’s Day bash.

A Christmas event had been planned for senior citizens, but plans were cancelled because of the COVID-19 resurgence, Marria said.

Committee members want to continue services along COVID guidelines.

“We don’t know what the future holds for that,” Marria said.

Committee members and those being served want a safe environment, she added.

“We’ve got to be safe. The safety is the most important thing,” Marria said. “We take pride in making sure our services are safe and respected. Quality of life is most important.”
