THOMASVILLE — The $18 million hotel under construction two blocks from downtown Thomasville is on schedule to open soon, its chief operating officer said.

Jeremy Emmett, hotel chief operating officer. said the worldwide effects of the coronavirus affected materials and shipments of supplies for the Courtyard by Marriott’s construction.

“However, the hotel is still on schedule,” he said. “We look forward to opening soon.”

The hotel incorporates downtown into many aspects of the structure at South Dawson Street and Remington Avenue. The Courtyard by Marriott Thomasville Downtown is even angled toward downtown.

“This is how the hotel is pointed toward downtown,” Emmett said, in reference to the direction the building faces. He said hotel developers want the Marriott to be considered an extension of downtown.

The four-story hotel — on close to four acres — will have 107 rooms and details found at larger hotels. Guest rooms remain under construction.

Southern Lodging, a local company, will operate the hotel.

“We’re using mahogany throughout,” Emmett said.

The 66,000-square-foot, transitional architectural-style hotel has 11,100 square feet of indoor and outdoor flexible event space.

Artwork from regional and local artists will be used throughout the hotel. Neither prints nor “bought-off-the-shelf” art will be used in the hotel, Emmett said.

“Upgraded building materials are being used throughout, such as mahogany millwork in the lobby and an antique pecky cypress ceiling in the plaza breezeway,” he said.

The hotel bistro will look out onto a large courtyard and fire pit.

“The evening bar area flows out into the courtyard,” Emmett said. “The bistro serves Starbucks coffee, cocktails and beer and wine, with morning and evening food service featuring appetizers, salads, sandwiches and small plates.”

Antique glass mirrors will frame the bar, which will have a mahogany coffered ceiling.

A nearby circular courtyard within the large courtyard will have a vine-covered pergola.

The event lawn — surrounded by lush landscaping — will be available for weddings and other events. The large courtyard will serve as a reception area for events.

Fully-grown trees will be part of hotel landscaping.

A full 24-hour marketplace will be available in the check-in area. Guests can shop for beverages and snacks, ice cream, a hot cup of coffee or items they forgot to bring.

The exterior and interior of the property flow seamlessly together, Emmett said, pointing out the location of the hotel pool.

“The front porch facing Dawson invites you to relax and enjoy your morning cup of coffee,” Emmett said.

The plaza breezeway at the front of the structure will be illuminated by large, traditional lanterns.

In addition to a fitness center, rooms for meetings, receptions, luncheons and other small events will be available. Meals will be catered by local caterers. A caterer prep kitchen is on the premises.

The Marriott project will provide about 50 jobs.

Architect for the project is PFVS in Atlanta. The contractor is IDC Construction of Atlanta.

Jackie Ellis Johnson is the local designer.
