Thomasville falls to Toombs County in state volleyball

THOMASVILLE — Toombs County rallied to take Game 4 and then held off Thomasville in Game 5, taking the Class A/AA state volleyball match 3-2 Saturday at the THS gym.

Thomasville scored the first two points of the decisive game, but Toombs reeled off eight straight points to take command and won 15-10.

Toombs County advances to meet Gordon Lee in the quarterfinals.

The visiting Lady Bulldogs won the first set 27-25 after the host Lady Bulldogs came back from a 20-13 deficit.

Lizzie Rinehart had three straight service points to bring Thomasville within 22-21, but she hurt her right arm on her final serve and did not return to action for the remainder of the match.

Thomasville took the next two, barely trailing at any point in either, by 25-15 and 25-18. In game 2, Thomasville opened a 12-4 lead and led by as much as 18-8. Anne Martin Lutes’ kill pushed the lead back to 20-12 and paved the way for the game 2 win.

In game 3, Kinsey Kelley served Thomasville to a 5-0 lead before Toombs County forged a 12-12 tie. Her ace made it 19-13 Thomasville, and Faith Fitzgerald made two diving plays during a rally before Toombs County won the point. 

Lutes came up with another key play to push the lead to 23-16 and keep Thomasville out of danger in game 3.

Toombs trailed 11-5 in the fourth game but stormed back to tie it at 12-12. Toombs eventually grabbed an 18-13 lead before Thomasville made a comeback of its own, tying the game at 22-22. But Toombs pulled out a 25-23 win to tie the match at two games apiece.
