CAIRO — The Cairo Police Department has completed its move into its new 3rd Avenue headquarters, City Manager Chris Addleton announced this week, and city officials are now left with several matters to consider.
Operations at the $3.7 million police headquarters began Monday.
“There are some kinks to be worked out but they’re operating fully and they’re all in the new police station,” Addleton said at this week’s meeting of the Cairo City Council.
Next up for the city is a decision on if and when the public can tour the 12,000 square foot building in an open house — an event that city officials desire but would be complicated due to the coronavirus pandemic.
“I’d like to have one at some point if it’s feasible,” Addleton said.
Also on the horizon for city officials is a decision on how to repurpose the former police station on Broad Street, a matter that was discussed in a public planning session hosted by the University of Georgia Archway Partnership in March. An Archway official present at Monday’s meeting said other methods of marketing the structure, such as a “virtual charrette,” may take place.
Mayor Howard Thrower noted that discussions of what to do with the former headquarters are likely to take place at a lengthy planning session for downtown Cairo next month.
Any action at the former police station, originally constructed as a train depot in 1905, is not likely to take place before 2021, Addleton said.
