THOMASVILLE — Thomasville City Council took action Monday that will put much-discussed, long-awaited South Pinetree Boulevard improvements in motion.

The council approved a bid of nearly $2.7 million submitted by The Scruggs Company in Hahira. The only other bid received was approximately $4 million, submitted by Capital Asphalt in Tallahassee.

“We feel real good about the pricing we got on this,” Wayne Newsome, city engineer, told the council. 

The project will begin in early August. The contract time is 180 days.

Scruggs’ bid includes furnishing all labor and equipment.

The project will be funded by a $3 million grant administered by the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT).

The city will pay for the project and be reimbursed by GDOT.

The project includes:

• Resurfacing from West Jackson Street to Old Monticello Road

• Five-foot sidewalks from Providence Plaza to Magnolia Road on the north side of the road

• Left-turn lanes at West Jackson, South Martin Luther King Drive and the Southwestern State Hospital entrance

• Curb and gutter from Fletcher Street to past King David Drive

• A roundabout at Magnolia and Pinetree
