Georgia Humanities recently announced grant awards to Georgia nonprofits, including the Jack Hadley Black History Museum, that sought CARES Act funding. Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act funds were awarded by Congress to the National Endowment for the Humanities, these funds are administered at the state level by Georgia Humanities.

Due to social distancing, the Jack Hadley Black History Museum cannot rely on foot-traffic; therefore, the focus is on moving programming to a virtual format. Specifically, funds will go to increasing hours of the museum assistant, Daniel Pittman, so he may work with JaMarcus Underwood, the museum educator, on digitizing the museum’s exhibits and increasing the museum’s presence on social media. The museum’s primary audiences, students and senior citizens, will enjoy digital programming such as a digital scavenger hunt, as well as on-line galleries or virtual presentations such as “The Artifact of the Month.”

Also, the educator and museum assistant will provide content such as: Kahoot! Learning games for students and seniors.

Pittman is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in history and political science, he has worked in his current position with the museum since December of 2019. As a museum assistant, his primary responsibilities include providing group tours; helping the Educator develop educational materials and, jumpstarting the museum’s social media program.

Seventy-seven Georgia nonprofits received funding from $5,000 to $20,000 to provide immediate relief to nonprofits negatively affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Per Georgia Humanities, “The intention of the CARES grants is to provide immediate relief to help stabilize humanities-focused organizations in our state.”
