CAIRO — Police responded to an incident last week where a juvenile was found to be in possession of a firearm at Cairo High School.

Jamal Marquaris Brown, 23, informed law enforcement Thursday morning that his Taurus 9mm handgun had been stolen from his 4th Street SW apartment by two CHS students.

According to Brown, the two juveniles had been visiting his home the night before when he caught them inspecting the weapon. The firearm was noticed to be missing shortly after their departure.

Brown told police that he had initially contacted the juveniles and told them that the gun needed to be returned to him immediately, but they denied responsibility for the theft.

CHS administration and Grady County School Police were notified of the allegations and proceeded to locate the students on campus.

One of the juveniles was located without incident and found not to be in possession of the weapon, but the second student fled when approached by school officials. School administration and officers pursued the student on foot through campus, the Housing Authority apartments and into the neighborhood north of campus before the juvenile was apprehended near 5th Street SE and 2nd Avenue SE.

The handgun, valued at $160, was recovered underneath a utility trailer where the second juvenile was taken into custody.

The juvenile who was apprehended, whose name was not released due to their age, was charged with carrying weapons within school safety zones.
