Chamber seeks nominations

The Cairo-Grady County Chamber of Commerce is seeking nominations for the awards that are given out at its annual meeting on January 25 at the Grady Cultural Center. Awards will be considered in the following categories: Man of the Year, Woman of the Year, Young Professional of the Year, Community Service Professional of the Year and Farm Family of the Year. Awards will also be given out for Large and Small Business of the Year. All nominations are confidential and may be submitted on the chamber’s website: www.cairogachamber.com

Learn about Trout Lilies

The Wolf Creek Trout Lilly Preserve will soon be in full bloom and if you would like to learn more about this one of a kind conservation area, you are invited to attend a program on January 14 at the Roddenbery Memorial Library given by Margaret Tyson. She will discuss the upcoming bloom of the trout lilies and the very unique atmosphere that has allowed them to thrive in the environment of Grady County. The program will be presented in the auditorium of the Roddenbery Memorial Library on Tuesday, January 14 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. and is free to all who attend.

New hours for library’s used book store

The Roddenbery Memorial Library’s Used Book Story has new hours and will now be only be open every third Tuesday and every fourth Saturday of the month. The book store is located in the Grady Room behind the main library.

MLK celebration planned

The MLK Collaborative Committee members invite everyone to join them for the annual celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day in Cairo on Monday, January 20. There will be a parade on North Broad Street beginning at 10 a.m. with a program and free food to follow at Holder Park. You’ll find more information about the event from committee members and on Facebook.

Sign up for recreation basketball

Registration is being held for the recreation basketball program at the Grady County Rec Department. The program is for youth ages 5 to 14 and the cost is $20. You may register weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the recreation department located on the Pelham Highway. For more information, call 377-8221.

Learn to sew in 2020

If you’ve always wanted to learn how to sew, the Roddenbery Memorial Library is offering a sewing class beginning this month. Sewing with Myrna is offered every second Saturday at 11 a.m. and every Tuesday at 6 p.m. No previous sewing experience is needed to attend the classes.

Local Al-Anon chapter meets Thursdays

Does someone close to you have a drinking or drug problem? Al-Anon Family Groups have one focus: to help friends and families of alcoholics. The local group meets in Cairo on Thursdays at 9 a.m. at the AA clubhouse, 3351 Hwy. 84, Cairo Ga 38828. For more information call Linda at (229) 221-5469.

Library has cake pans available

Thanks to a generous donation by Cairo’s local VFW No. 8933 Jr. Vice Commander, Nova Maul, the Roddenbery Memorial Library is delighted to be able to offer cake pans for check out. Patrons can check out up to two pans for seven days with no renewals and must return the pans washed and in their hanging bags to avoid a cleaning fee.
