Crime numbers down in Cairo for 2019

CAIRO — Overall crime was down in 2019 in the City of Cairo, according to data released by the city police department.
A total of 828 crimes were reported last year, compared to 842 crimes the year prior. Another 189 calls to the police department last year did not result in a formal investigation.
Burglaries, DUIs and disturbances of public peace were among several crimes that saw a decrease compared to 2018, though several other major crimes did see small increases.
Three murders were committed in the city last year, up from one in 2018, though arrest warrants have been issued in each case. Another two death investigations in 2019 have since been cleared by other means.
A total of 46 drug offenses, up from 38 the year prior, have resulted in more than 100 arrest warrants being issued thus far.
Sexual offenses saw a jump as well, with 21 in 2019. More than 250 larcenies took place, which was also an increase.
Police responded to 63 burglary cases in 2019, just less than half of which remain open. Six such cases have resulted in an arrest, and another 26 burglaries have been cleared by exception.
Thirteen vehicles were reported stolen in 2019, down from 17 such reports in 2018.
Case of property damage, forgery and obstruction all saw decreases.
In all, more than 350 arrest warrants were issued by the police department last year out of 390 different cases handled.
Of those cases, 286 have been cleared. Another 104 cases remain active and ongoing.
