CAIRO — No foul play is suspected in the death of former city police chief Keith Sandefur, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation has confirmed.

Sandefur died Dec. 19 from a single gunshot wound at the city firing range on Wight Road. Sandefur was at the firing range with a friend who is a city police investigator when the shooting occurred, according to the Grady County Sheriff’s Office.

The shooting allegedly was self-inflicted. A GBI spokesperson did not comment Monday on if the incident is being treated as a suicide, but did confirm that foul play is not suspected.

GBI has not released any other information regarding Sandefur’s death, which came just weeks after the longtime city police chief was charged with two counts of felony theft by conversion and resigned his position. His retirement had been set to go into effect Dec. 31.

According to the GBI, Sandefur had purchased property and charged the expenses to the City of Cairo. GBI said the property, which has since been recovered, was then given to Sandefur’s civilian associates.

The GBI Sylvester office is handling Sandefur’s death investigation. The Thomasville GBI office is handling Sandefur’s criminal investigation, which is still open.
