CAIRO — Residents in Cairo may see some irregularities in water pressure this month as the city fire department conducts a city-wide test of fire hydrants.

The Cairo Fire Department announced Monday that it will begin testing city fire hydrants this week. Tests began Monday morning and are expected to be completed sometime during the first week of June, barring any inclement weather.

Low-flow tests of fire hydrants are conducted twice a year across the entire city grid, said fire chief Bill Schafer. The tests involve opening the hydrants to ensure they function properly. At the conclusion of the tests, the hydrants are cleared of surrounding weeds and receive a new coat of paint.

One section of town is selected for a full-flow test once each year, and this year it will be the southwest quadrant of the city. Aside from ensuring the hydrants function properly, full-flow tests also monitor the water flow rate in gallons per minute (GPM) and water pressure levels.

In the mean time, Schafer said homeowners may experience low water pressure or a slight rust-coloration in their water.

Anyone experiencing discolored water can clear the discoloration by running their faucet for three to five minutes, Schafer said.

If the problem persists, Schafer said residents can contact the fire department at (229) 377-3293.
