LIVE OAK, Fla. — A Lake City nurse arrested in May for solicitation of a minor for sex and transmission of materials harmful to minors pled guilty Tuesday.

Matthew Neil Melvin, a 41-year-old advanced practice registered nurse, received five years in prison as part of the plea deal as well as 10 years of probation for traveling to meet a minor and transmission of harmful materials to a minor. Melvin will also be designated a sexual offender and was fined $1000 and must pay court costs and the cost of the investigation and prosecution, which total an additional $1,169. He also agreed to surrender his medical license.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement began the investigation May 9 — at the request of the Suwannee County Sheriff’s Office — after Melvin was alleged have sexually assaulted a male juvenile patient and was sending sexual innuendos to the victim through Snapchat.

According to an FDLE investigative report, the victim had sustained a shoulder injury that required treatment. The report states that Melvin requested the victim’s cell phone number so he could let him know the results of an MRI on the injured shoulder.

Subsequently, Melvin was added as a friend on the victim’s Snapchat and he began messaging the victim with inappropriate questions, according to the report.

The report states the victim notified his mother.

During an interview with investigators, the mother said several months back during a physical exam that the victim had expressed feeling uncomfortable with Melvin. The victim said the nurse inappropriately touched his privates and stared at it with no other examination conducted, according to the report.

Following the interview, an FDLE agent posed undercover as the victim for further messaging with Melvin over the course of several days, during which he indicated he wanted to sexually assault the child and sent a photo of his underwear showing his groin area, the report states.

When the agent, posing as the victim, alerted Melvin that he was traveling to Lake City on May 14, the nurse requested a meeting, according to the report.

Instead, Melvin was arrested and booked into the Columbia County Jail on May 14.
