Cutting down on obesity will help you live better

Less than 30 years ago, only 15 percent of the nation’s adults were considered obese. Today, according to consumerprotect.com’s study, that figure is more than double, at 30.1 percent. In Georgia, that figure rises to 31.6 percent. For Georgia, obesity rates have climbed from 20.6 percent in 2000 and 10.1 percent in 1990, according to stateofobesity.org. A WalletHub study earlier this year pegged Georgia as ranking 43rd for healthy children, and the outfit called Georgia the 17th fattest state in a 2017 study.

But the problems of obesity extend to the bottom line, too, according to the Centers for Disease Control. the estimated annual medical cost of those who are obese was $1,429 higher than those who have normal weight. In 2008 dollars, the annual cost of obesity was $147 billion in medical expenses.

The numbers are alarming and troubling. That’s why the Live Better efforts from Archbold Medical Center is vitally important. More and more partners are signing on with the initiative to promote healthier lifestyles and healthier eating. We applaud the people and the gyms behind them in the LB Fit 19 program as they strive to make a better life and healthier life from themselves.
