CAIRO — A suspected drug dealer was taken into custody Monday morning after law enforcement saw her driving while not wearing a seatbelt.

April Dawn Sammons, 39, was taken into custody on charges of possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, possession of less than an ounce of marijuana and a safety restraining violation.

Capt. Chris Luckey of the Grady County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were acting on an anonymous tip that a shipment of narcotics was going to pass through the county.

The sheriff’s office located the transport vehicle, but were unable to initiate a traffic stop without cause.

Luckey caught a break when Sammons put her vehicle in motion without wearing a seatbelt.

“That gave us proper cause for a stop,” Luckey said.

During the subsequent traffic stop, Sammons displayed what Luckey thought was suspicious behavior.

“She was extremely nervous,” he said. “More nervous than a common person would be when stopped by an officer.”

Sammons agreed to a consensual search of the vehicle, which uncovered 1.5 grams of methamphetamine, a small amount of marijuana, multiple digital scales and several small plastic bags.

“Those are all common indicators of distribution,” Luckey said.

Authorities also found that Sammons is currently serving a probation sentence for possession of a controlled substance.

Sammons is currently held in the Grady County Jail on a $6,250 bond.

Another passenger who was also present in the vehicle was later released after questioning.

The traffic stop occurred on Highway 84 near 5th Street NE shortly after 11 a.m.
