MOULTRIE, Ga. — An inmate accused of walking off a work detail in Doerun May 2 was indicted last week by the Colquitt County Grand Jury.

Dennis Murray Jr., an inmate at Colquitt County Correctional Institution, was recaptured less than two hours after he slipped away, according to reports from the time.

“He was helping the City of Doerun in getting ready for May Day,” CCCI Warden Billy Howell told The Observer at the time. “They were taking their lunch break. They let him go into the bushes to take a bathroom break.”

When Murray, 38, of Hephzibah, Ga., did not return in a reasonable amount of time, officers put out the alert of his escape. Several agencies responded, and Doerun Elementary School was locked down. Dogs were used to track him, and officers caught him after a short foot chase.

The grand jury indicted him on one count of escape and three counts of obstruction of an officer. According to the indictment, two of the obstruction counts relate to refusing to surrender when two different officers ordered him to do so, and the third relates to refusing to get into a patrol car after he was recaptured.
