CAIRO — The results of the City of Cairo’s financial audit will have to wait until later this month.

City auditor Nick Valenti of Valenti, Rackley & Associates was scheduled to appear before the city council Monday night to discuss the findings of the 2019 financial audit, but work on the audit has yet to be completed.

Valenti said the audit is about 80 percent finished, and work should be completed within the next two weeks.

“We think we’re within striking distance of getting there,” he told the council.

The council will instead likely have to wait until the evening of Monday, Dec. 23 — a regularly scheduled meeting which was expected to be canceled for the Christmas holiday — for Valenti to present his findings.

Council member Jimmy Douglas requested that the completed audit be presented to the city finance committee prior to the city council.

Though Valenti was unable to present the audit’s findings, he did provide the council a status report on the project.

Work on the city’s audit got off to a late start, Valenti said, in part due to certain financial information not being received until late October. City staff has worked diligently to assist in completing the project since then, the auditor said.

The state deadline for the audit to be submitted is Dec. 31. Valenti said he fully expects the audit to be completed by that date.
