Central shuts down Wayne County, takes Game 3 and series

JESUP — A double play brought in the game’s only run, and the Thomas County Central pitching made it stand up as the Yellow Jackets took Game 3 from the Wayne County Yellow Jackets 1-0 Friday evening.

With the win, Thomas County Central advances to the Class AAAAA Elite Eight to face Loganville.

With runners on first and third in the bottom of the fourth inning, with Central as the home team, Tyler Carter hit into a double play. Courtesy runner Jerrod Johnson scored on the play.

Central’s Luke Benton struck out two and walked one in 6 1/2 innings before giving way to Nick Herndon. With the tying run on base in the seventh, Herndon retired the only two batters he faced to close the game and the series.

Benton retired the first 10 batters he faced, and the defense turned two double plays behind him. Wayne County had only one runner in scoring position for the entire game.

Slade Taylor was 2-for-3 for Central, held to six hits by Wayne County’s pitching.
