Archbold Memorial Hospital recently installed a new Signa Artist magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) unit in the hospital’s radiology department.

Magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI, is a test that uses magnets, radio waves and a computer to make detailed images inside bodies. Doctors often use this test to diagnose disease or injury and to see how well bodies have responded to treatment.

The strength of the new Signa Artist’s magnet is 1.5 Tesla, which is equivalent to that of the unit it replaced. But what sets the new technology apart are the patient comfort features and the much improved clinical performance through innovative applications, which enables physicians to visualize the body like never before.

The new scanner is incredibly versatile and meets imaging needs for various medical specialties including studies for oncology, orthopedics, neurology and neurosurgery, as well as cardiovascular conditions. Additionally, the application portfolio contains imaging solutions for a wide variety of contrasts, 2D and 3D volumetric data, including motion correction capabilities.

The new machine will also provide a whole new level of patient comfort, redefining the imaging experience with feet-first, as well as traditional head-first, imaging options and a comfortable memory foam surface for patients to lie on during the scan. A wider table design sits lower to the ground enabling easier patient positioning, and also accommodates larger patients. Enhanced accelerations techniques minimize scan times for patients, and an adaptable coil design enables the machine to get closer to the patient, while maximizing image quality.
