Road check nets felony warrant, drug arrests

THOMASVILLE — Road checks do not result in motorists being cited only for traffic offenses.
A traffic offense can lead to an arrest if a driver has an outstanding warrant.
A driver who arrived at the road check — at Smith and Covington avenues — was pulled over for not wearing a seat belt. If a traffic violation results, officers run checks on the individuals through the Georgia Crime Information Center (GCIC). The checks ensure the person’s drivers license is valid, said Maj. Wade Glover, Thomasville Police Department public information officer.
The GCIC check also shows if an outstanding warrant is pending.
In the recent road check, the driver not wearing a seat belt also was charged with a suspended driver’s license and felony probation warrant.
Glover noted it also is Georgia law that a passenger over the age of 18 must wear a sear belt or be charged with no seat belt.
The road check, which involved neighboring law enforcement agencies, resulted in the following other citations:
• Window tint — 10
• Children restraint — 2
• Seat belt violations — 6
• Suspended registration — 3
• Felony marijuana possession — 2
Warnings issued were:
• No license on person — 4
• Equipment violations — 2
• Seat belt violations — 4
• Failure to attach revalidation decal — 1
Glover said road check locations are chosen based on motorists being able to see the road check, places for motorists to pull off the road, room for officers’ vehicles to be parked and the presence of a traffic control device, such as a stop sign.
“It’s all about safety. We want to pick a location safe for citizens and officers, as well,” Glover said.
