Roberts’ best events were the balance beam and vault, where she scored a 9.9 in each. She added a 9.85 score in floor exercise and 8.8 on the parallel bars.

Competition was stiff in all events.

Teammate Rylee Watson and Lowndes’ Taya Burton were on Roberts’ heels for most of the competition.

Burton finished in second place on vault, bars and beam with scores of 9.7, 8.6 and 9.8, respectively. Watson had the second highest point total on floor, scoring a 9.6, and was third on vault at 9.5.

Burton (37.6) and Watson (36.5) were second and third in all-around.

Tift County began the day on vault, with Lexi Cavanaugh, Briana Nelson, Roberts and Watson competing. Cavanaugh came through with an 8.5 and Nelson scored 8.7. The Gym Devils then moved on to bars with Watson, Roberts and Nelson. Watson had an 8.2 on bars.

Cavanaugh, Roberts, Watson and Kenslee Ann Webb competed on beam and floor exercise. All four Gym Devils scored at least an 8.4 in floor exercise. Besides the high scores by Roberts and Watson, Cavanaugh scored a 9.0.

Taylor LeMay of Camden was third on bars, scoring an 8.55. Samantha Folarin of Lowndes was third on beam (9.5). Folarin finished just out of the running on vault with a 9.3.

After the competition but before winners were announced, Tift honored its two seniors, Cavanaugh and Nelson. Head coach Jodi Roberts said Cavanaugh planned on attending Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College and Georgia Southwestern State to become a preschool teacher. Nelson’s plans were to go to Columbus State and become a lawyer.

Tift has already qualified for the state preliminaries as a team, as have Lowndes and Camden. Colquitt County, who had been scheduled to compete Saturday, but had started spring break, has also qualified as a team. Preliminaries will be held at Dunwoody High on April 14.

The state meet is set for April 20 at Ola High. Individuals and teams can qualify for state. Elyssa Roberts was Tift’s lone state qualifier in 2017.
