Head coach Gregg Segraves said the girls’ score was even closer than it appeared.

Eight of Lowndes’ points came in the 2×400, an event he said is not recognized by the state. Tift did not enter any teams in the 2×400.

It was the Lady Devils’ third team second place finish this season. Segraves is already issuing happy predictions for upcoming meets.

“It’s going to be a great April,” he said.

Fifteen schools sent girls teams to Lowndes and 13 competed in boys.

Nicky Jones won the triple jump for Tift County. Her distance was 34’8.5,” allowing her to edge Kristion Jeffries of Westover for the gold.

The Jones surname was a good one for Tift Saturday.

Mike Jones pulled off another victory for the school, taking the 110 hurdles in 15.41 seconds.

Emily Golden had runner-up finishes in the 1,600 and 3,200. Golden ran the former in 5:36 and the latter in 11:47. Kiera Green also had two second places at the meet. Her throw of 36’0.5” gave her second in the shot put and Green threw 107’11” in the discus.

Quan Mathis gave the Blue Devils second place in the 400, finishing in 50.72 seconds.

Allison Stone took second in high jump, clearing 4’11.” More second places came from the Devils as Otis Jackson’s leap of 41’4.75” was runner-up in the triple jump and Chad Williams threw 48’3” in the shot put.

Segraves was pleased with many of the marks set at the Harmon Invitational. Shadiamond McIntyre took seventh in the 400 meters.

“Her times are getting better and better,” he said. “Otis (Jackson) is doing a good job, especially in the triple jump. Shamel Johnson is getting back to his old form.”

At the moment, Segraves still said the athletes were finding their rhythms. Coaches are pushing the athletes to set personal marks.

It’s paying off. Twenty-four Tift thinclads accumulated points in individual events.
