DALTON, Ga. — Summer break is coming to an end and Tommy Pinson, manager of the Mack Gaston Community Center, said it’s important that students are prepared for the new school year.

On Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. a Back 2 School Bash will be held at the community center, 218 N. Fredrick St. in Dalton.

“We’ll have free school supplies, lunch and haircuts,” Pinson said.

He said the haircuts will be for children 12 and under, who must be accompanied by a parent or adult. School supplies will be provided to all students.

Damon Gordon, a barber and founder of Powering Up Starts Here (PUSH), and Shannon Terry, owner of Unkut Productions in Dalton, will provide the haircuts on a first-come, first-served basis.

Gordon said PUSH does outreach in the community, such as feeding the homeless, sponsoring families during Thanksgiving and Christmas, and buying toys for children.

Terry, a Dalton native, said he remembers the struggles his parents faced when it was time to shop for school.

“If they had a chance to save a little money I’m sure it would’ve made a difference,” he said.

Terry said he wants to help lift burdens off of parents who may need help.

“That’s why God blessed us with gifts, it’s up to us to use them in the right way,” he said.

Gordon said giving back is why he started his organization earlier this year.

“It’s important to help others, especially the youth,” he said.

“Whatever we can do to help them succeed and stay out of the streets, I’m willing to do,” he said.

Gordon said a haircut may not seem like much, but it makes a difference.

“I’m happy we can be a part of an event like this that focuses on kids,” he said.

After the back-to-school event, Pinson said the Summer League Basketball championship game and a talent show will be held. The basketball league is for youth ages 8 to 13 and is organized by Dalton resident T.J. Blackwell.

On Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m. stylists and barbers at Natasha’s Tight Cutz and Stylez at 624 N. Glenwood Ave. in Dalton will offer free haircuts for boys and limited hairstyles for girls.

Classes start for Dalton Public Schools on Tuesday and for Whitfield County Schools on Wednesday.
