DALTON, Ga. — Alveda King, the niece of Martin Luther King Jr., a civil rights activist, author and pro-life advocate, is the guest speaker at the Women’s Enrichment Center annual banquet Tuesday at the Dalton Convention Center.

“I believe her story and topic of interests is the firm belief that civil rights extend to the unborn as well as the rest of us,” board member Rob Woodard said.

The Women’s Enrichment Center is a nonprofit agency that “provides women, men and families with the emotional help and practical resources needed to care for themselves during and after pregnancy,” according to its website. Tickets for the banquet are $50 per person and are available by calling the center at (706) 278-1050. Dinner is included.

“She talks about the rights of the unborn quite a bit,” Woodward said. “She’s helping us realize the challenges we have as a country and world to extend life, liberty and happiness to all.”

Renee Rector, executive director of the center, said King will also talk about her personal story of having two abortions.

“She’s always been a voice for civil rights and individuals,” Rector said. “That extends to babies that haven’t been born yet.”

Rector said this is the banquet’s tenth year.

“We’re excited to hear her story and see how we can collectively work together to make the family unit as strong as possible,” Rector said.

Rector said this is the only fundraiser they have to support the center.

“We want to be able to continue working with families in our community,” Rector said. “We provide families with emotional needs and resources they need to welcome children into the world.”

Since last September, Rector said the center has provided services to 278 women, had 1,500 visits and given out a thousand packs of diapers and wipes.

The center also provides clothes, car seats and cribs at no charge. Parents take classes to earn points to use in the center’s in-house store.

“This banquet is our opportunity to share what we do and how people can partner with us,” Rector said. “I think Alveda will enlighten people in the room. It’s going to be a good time.”

The event begins at 6:30 p.m. The convention center is at 2211 Dug Gap Battle Road.
