Duke-Knight wins Grady commission runoff

CAIRO — June Duke Knight will be the new face for Grady County’s District 1. 

Knight garnered 217 votes in the runoff election, claiming the seat vacated by former commissioner Elwyn Childs.

Richard Jordan, also in the runoff, garnered 213 votes. 

“We gave it a good shot,” Jordan said. “No one could say I didn’t work hard for it; things just weren’t in my favor.” 

Jordan also congratulated Knight on her win. 

Voting results showed Jordan garnered 75 votes in absentee and early votes to Knight’s 44 votes. Knight captured the most votes in the Ragan, Spring Hill and Whigham precincts. Jordan received the most votes in the Blowing Cave precinct. 

Both candidates received 10 votes each in the Lime Sink precinct. 

No votes were cast in the Higdon precinct. 

In the Nov. 7 special election, Jordan received 180 votes and Knight got 131 votes.  

A three-way runoff between Knight, Jordan, and Earle Jeter, another candidate, was possible. Knight and Jeter both received 131 votes. Jeter dropped out of the race on Nov. 8.
