Unfortunately for them, the Warriors could not pull off another comeback in those historic matchups, as their bats never really got going in 5-0 and 10-4 losses to Bulloch Academy on Tuesday.

“All season long, these girls have been the kids that have been tenacious,” Brookwood coach Christa Boggs said. “We talked about that all season long about not giving up. They’ve done the little things and put together a team that has been able to come out on top more times than not.

“Today we faced a great team that has a lot of good tools and we just weren’t able to get our bats together in time to make it happen. I’m just so proud of our entire team.”

The story of Game 1 for Brookwood was one of stranded runners. The Warriors had their chances but could never capitalize, leaving a total of eight on base for the game.

Brookwood’s best chance to get a run on the board came in the first inning. After Anna Vick was hit on the game’s first pitch, Dara Moore collected the Warriors’ first hit of the day to put two runners in scoring position with no outs. However, a popout and two strikeouts ended the big opportunity.

The Gators scored their first two runs in the top of the third, and added three more as the game  went on.

Pitcher Landry Joyner kept her team in the game, but could not get enough run support to pick up the win. She allowed four earned runs, allowed seven hits and struck out four over seven innings. Moore went 3-for-3 in Game 1 and 5-for-7 on the day.

In Game 2, Brookwood started everything off by doing what it couldn’t do in the first matchup. In a very similar first inning, both Vick and Moore reached on singles to start the game, but unlike Game 1, Brookwood delivered. A two-run double from Abby Lee brought both of the runners across, and the Warriors held what would end up as its only lead of the day at 2-0.

The Gators scored one in the bottom half to make it 2-1 and eventually took a 5-2 lead in the top of the third. Moore cut that to 5-3 with a solo home run to left field in that frame. Lee added another RBI in the seventh with a single, but Bulloch eventually came away with the decisive win.

Lee, a freshman, pitched four innings in Game 2, striking out two. She went 2-for-4 with three RBI in the final game, and 3-for-6 on the day. With both of Brookwood’s seniors leaving, she will be one of the players to watch in the years ahead.

“We’ve got a good group of juniors that have been playing ball for a while,” Boggs said. “We have two freshman pitchers that are ready fo fill that void that Landry’s gonna leave. We’re excited about what’s to come.”
