THOMASVILLE — With playoffs now out of the picture for Brookwood, one might think that it has nothing to play for in its season finale.

The Warriors would disagree with that notion.

Brookwood (4-4, 0-3) will host Deerfield-Windsor at Warrior Field tonight, looking for its first region win of the year.

While the Warriors can shake up the GISA Region 3-3A standings with a win, being the spoiler is not what they’re most interested in.

“We can have a winning record and extend that streak to five seasons,” Brookwood coach Shane Boggs said. “We can beat Deerfield for the third time in four years, which is a big deal. We can do it in front of a 10-year reunion (of the 2007 championship team). There’s a lot to play for. All those things that are personal achievements will drive these guys.”

In their 41-3 loss to Southland Academy last week, the Warriors were able to drive the ball enough, but were never able to take advantage of opportunities in enemy territory. Brookwood had five trips to the red zone over the course of the game and only came away with a single field goal. To beat Deerfield, that will have to change.

“In life, you have to finish whatever you started,” Boggs said. “We drove it 20 to 20 so many times but just didn’t finish.”

The Knights, who are tied for second in the region with Valwood, boast a strong running game led by Garrett Jones and John Logan. The Warrior defense had its moments last week against the Raiders, but will have to stop the run first, then the resuling passing game.

After tonight, Boggs will have been the head coach at Brookwood for 11 combined years, not including a hiatus from 2009-2012. The situation he’s in is a new one, but he is confident that his team has prepared just as much as any other game to this point.

“This is the first time in my coaching career that I coached a team that went into Sunday preparations without a chance to make the playoffs,” Boggs said. “I would tell you that our staff prepared like it was a Super Bowl. Our team has prepared all week. I’ve been really pleased with that.”
