EATONTON, Ga. — An Eatonton mother and her 9-year-old daughter were killed Wednesday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of the U.S. Highway 441 bypass and Imperial Mill Road in Eatonton.
The wreck, which happened about 4:30 p.m., claimed the lives of Jakeda Ellison, 37, and her daughter, Shamaylaka Ellison, an elementary student at a local school in Putnam County, according to Georgia State Patrol Cpl. Corey Seymour of the Madison post.
Ellison’s 3-year-old niece, who was sitting in the backseat of the car, was not injured. She was properly buckled in her car seat, the trooper said.
Cpl. Seymour said the elementary school student was apparently killed instantly, while her mother died a short time later at Putnam General Hospital in Eatonton.
She was pronounced dead at the scene by Putnam County Coroner Gary McElhanney.
Firefighters/first responders with the Eatonton Fire Department, as well as Putnam County Fire Rescue used the jaws of life, a specialized cutting tool, to free the victims from the twisted wreckage of the car.
Personnel with the Putnam County Emergency Medical Services also responded to the wreck, as did officers with the Eatonton Police Department, including Chief Kent Lawrence.
Grief counselors were expected to be at the school Thursday where the girl attended.
The driver of the 2013 Chevrolet 3500 series pickup truck, Cathy Harwood, also of Eatonton, complained of a shoulder injury but declined medical treatment at the scene, the trooper said.
Cpl. Seymour said Ellison was trying to cross the bypass highway from Imperial Mill Road when she pulled into the path of Harwood’s pickup truck, which slammed into the passenger’s side of the car. He described it as a T-bone crash.
